More Hope For The Future

I spent a very pleasant afternoon yesterday in Wichita Falls, Texas, where I spoke to the Pre-Health Society at Midwestern State University. I was very impressed with this group of mostly premedical students. They were attentive and asked important questions about what the proper motivations should be to enter the medical profession.  We talked about the Hippocratic Oath, the physician’s covenant with society, and the characteristics of a learned profession. We spent time trying to gain a deeper understanding of empathy and healing. Finally, I offered them my prescription for avoiding burnout as they progressed through the rigors of medical training.  I left feeling grateful for having met them, and hopeful for the future of medicine.
